Meet Jenni

Meet Jenni, who started elementary school dreaming to be an anesthesiologist only to find herself as a debt-ridden pharmacy graduate decades later. It’s the story of a new American Dream.

When I was in the 2nd grade, I made a book stating I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. I remember having to spell this word out to the typist as she used the school’s sole computer to create my book. Somehow at age 8, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. There was one problem, I did not do well with blood. I enjoyed art class and was fairly good at math and science. In elementary school, I even landed a spot our math olympics team.

As I got older, I developed a knack for chemistry which opened my mind to chemicals and drugs. I reevaluated my dream job choice and landed on pharmacist. This job checked off both of my desires: it was in the medial field and I didn’t need to handle blood or guts. I was very interested to learn how a small tablet can be taken and potentially cure whatever ailment one had. So, I shifted my focus towards pharmacy and started working on the prerequisites I needed for pharmacy school.

Along came Chris

Along this pathway I met a boy. We barely spoke as we sat across from each other in art class in 1997 but there was something there. Little did I know that little spark would be the beginning of a lifelong journey together.

Our relationship started in high school and we remained close throughout college. Chris and I became even closer as I attended VCU’s School of Pharmacy and started racking up student loans. As our relationship grew, I realized his future and mine were going to be different from the standard white picket fence American Dream. It was going to be better. We started to go outside the traditional way of thinking about keystone life decisions. We had to make plans for the future early on and we had to start working on them right away.

Starting the New American Dream

This is the story of how it all began, how we got to where we are today, and where we hope to go in the future. If you want to see how all of our plans pan out with this ever changing world, catch up on our story and stay tuned for more posts.
